Beyond a few unfocused glimpses of a hulking figure roaming his office in the background, the Weinstein of “The Assistant” is a phantom menace who barrels down on the young womans life, but this fascinating psychological investigation doesnt allow him to hijack a story that belongs to her. “The Assistant” doesnt document the specifics of Weinsteins abuses recounted by so many over the past two years; instead, it explores the harassment and control that kept his unwitting enablers under his grip. Greens first fiction feature following the innovative true-crime documentary “Casting JonBenet” feels like a natural extension of her earlier work. Built out of immaculate research into the working conditions under Weinstein and how they affected many of the young women on its payroll, the movie unfolds as a gradual accumulation of intricate details, mapping out the characters exhausting routine until it becomes her own private Twilight Zone. “The Assistant” adopts such a gradual pace that it sometimes works against the stunning performance at its center, but theres no doubting the hypnotic power of a movie that digs inside Weinsteins harrowing reign and observes the mechanics that allowed it to last so long. A quiet work with major ambitions, “The Assistant” is a significant cultural statement in cinematic form. As Jane, Garner delivers a masterclass of small, uncertain gestures. A Northwestern grad who harbors dreams of producing movies, shes already enmeshed in an endless work cycle as the movie begins: Hopping out of her Astoria home before the sun rises, polishing up the vacant office, speeding through emails, printing out price sheets, and so on; the rest of the company slowly comes to life around her. Green constructs the atmosphere with a masterful focus on fragments of business talk, the clacking of keyboards, and ringing phones that draw out the drab nature of Janes work: Shes at once at the center of the action and entirely removed from it. And that includes the activities of her invisible boss, who only seems to notice her when she screws up. It doesnt take long: After angering some moody client, Jane gets a call from her unseen overlord as fragments of his bitter tirade (“They told me you were smart”) are barely audible. The specifics matter less than the way the abuse plays out on Garners face as she sinks into her hands, and the formal procedure that follows is just a few steps shy of a dark joke: The pair of unnamed male assistants (Noah Robbins and Jon Orsini) who sit across from Jane and judge her every move assemble behind her to dictate an apology email, and Jane does as shes told. As much as “The Assistant” involves the process through which one man exerts control over a woman trapped by his direction, it also shows how the toxic workplace infects others in its grasp. As the physical toil of Janes work piles up — cleaning dishes, taking out the garbage, dealing with paper cuts — she begins to notice the evidence of Weinsteins worst crimes. The offhand discovery of an earring piques Janes interest, as does a passing comment from one of the men at the company that nobody should ever sit on the office couch. Green makes the brilliant gamble of letting audiences pick up the pieces. With time, it becomes clear that Jane sees no recourse but to contend with circumstances that have since become a matter of grotesque public record. For a while, “The Assistant” seems as though it could simply hover in Janes world for hours, as if presenting the #MeToo equivalent of Chantal Akermans “Jeanne Dielman. ” But then the movie injects a subtle plot twist, as Janes suddenly tasked with taking a young new assistant (Kristine Froseth) to her own hotel room. The wide-eyed Ohio transplants sudden A-list treatment confounds Jane, who seems as if shes in denial about her boss real agenda with the young woman, and instigates a visit to the company HR office that pitches the movie into a whole new level of discomfort. Played by “Succession” star Matthew Macfadyen, the executive tasked with belittling Jane for her complaint magnifies the way the company exerted control over their liabilities and how they got away with it. The backlash Jane experiences from her small attempt to take charge is devastating, and it ends with a sudden email from her boss that gives her just enough encouragement to keep her in line. “The Assistant” pads out so much of its 85-minute runtime with eerie textures that it tends to linger on the same note of despair, and it struggles to move the story into a new place by its closing act. The tension dissipates as “The Assistant” drifts toward its finale, and theres a lingering sense that it underserves Janes story by basking so much of the companys happenings in total mystery. Its hard not to imagine what Green, whose previous work has used reenactments and voiceover to immerse viewers in real events, might have accomplished if shed paired these scenes with real accounts from Weinsteins victims. On the other hand, “The Assistant” doesnt need to overstate the nature of Janes conundrum. Best appreciated as an experimental narrative about workplace oppression, its a fascinating illustration of how the worst abuses can remain hidden even from those closest to the lions den. Green has not set out to make the definitive retelling of the Weinstein scandal, the reporting on his years of sexual abuse and coverups, or the fallout that destroyed his company. Three-quarters of the movie consists of the advanced banality of booking hotels, ordering lunch, and waiting in silence for elevator doors to open. Even at 85 minutes, the movie is heavily padded, and as was the case with many previous Sundance films, the casual viewer will wonder whether it might have been wise for the filmmaker (in this case, writer-director Kitty Green) to develop a feature-length story before starting production. As for the rare moments of interspersed gossip, some seems like it was plucked off the assistants chat room and has little to do with Weinstein. In one sharply etched moment, the boss berates the assistant on the phone, then sends an apologetic email: “Youre very good. If Im tough on you its because I know you can be great. ” Clever, and revealing: This must be how Hollywoods legendarily nasty tycoons simultaneously justify their rotten behavior and make their underlings feel like theres a point to it all, so they shouldnt quit just yet. Green need not state that “getting yelled at” is not actually a skill, much less a spur to greatness. Whether Hollywood people understand this, I couldnt say. Even at its most damning, though, The Assistant is so mild that Weinsteins own lawyers could hardly object if the jury at his trial were to see this film. Weinstein has always contended that he had sex with lots of women but it was always consensual; nothing in the film goes against that. In a strangely oblivious interlude, the assistant steels herself and walks over to the H. R. department to blow the whistle. A compliance officer (Matthew Macfadyen) who at first seems receptive and friendly turns sinister and disagreeable while shes in his office stumbling through what she knows, and a strong couple of minutes from Macfadyen provide the only real acting in the movie. But what is he supposed to do? The assistant has no evidence of any illegal activity. The compliance officer can hardly call in a SWAT team and destroy the company because the head honcho is having extramarital affairs. Society in general has long since passed the point where anyone really considered poking his nose into somebody elses extramarital affairs, unless other wrongdoing was involved, but in Hollywood the casting couch has been standard equipment since Day 1. The assistant has no case. The compliance officer is absolutely right to tell her so. That scene is the crux of the movies argument, which is a thin one: that young women were helplessly caught up in an evil system in which other young women were exploited by Harvey Weinstein. But this character is the wrong lens through which to view the Weinstein story; you might as well ask a guy who sells hot dogs at Minute Maid Park what he thinks of the Houston Astros scandal. The Weinstein scandal reaches to the highest levels of the entertainment industry and government. People far more important than the office copy-girl knew far more about what was happening with Weinstein, and they all agreed to participate in a conspiracy of silence for the tawdriest of reasons: Weinstein knew how to win Oscars, which all of them desperately wanted. He won one for Meryl Streep. He won one for Penelope Cruz. He won one for Kate Winslet. He won one for Gwyneth Paltrow. None of them had the slightest desire to speak out against him, and none did. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama were happy to take Weinsteins money too, blinders clamped on. All of this is a lot more interesting than an assistant finding an earring on the carpet, but dont hold your breath for a movie that tells the whole story.

REVIEW: In essence, THE ASSISTANT is the first (but likely not the last) movie about Harvey Weinstein. Due for a theatrical release next month through Bleecker Street, its well-timed considering that his trial is currently underway, with damming testimony each and every day giving us deeper insight into the culture of abuse that was seemingly a day-to-day thing at Miramax and The Weinstein Company. One of the big questions has been whether or not the people who worked for Weinstein knew, and how complicit they were in his crimes. Kitty Greens THE ASSISTANT gives voice to the many underlings Weinstein burned through over the years, many of whom were shackled by NDAs or the threat of career ruin were they to speak up. THE ASSISTANT takes you inside the corporate culture in a minimalist way, taking place over one seemingly endless day in the New York office of what one can assume is The Weinstein Company as Kelly Garners Jane spends a day working for her tyrannical, unseen boss. We track her as she arrives in the middle of the night on a Monday morning to do things both routine (printing up the weekend box office, making coffee) and distinctly not routine (cleaning fluids off the “casting couch”, retrieving lost jewelry left in his office) while also fielding calls from her bosss frazzled wife. We never see the man who would be Weinstein, although we hear his voice on the phone as he berates Jane in random fits of pique (lets not forget - in addition to being a sex abuser he was also a world-class bully. Anyone looking for a sense of empowerment or a happy ending should look elsewhere. Thats not this movie. Rather, its an honest look into a permissive culture where going with the flow was easier than blowing the whistle, with Janes trip to a slimy HR guru ( Matthew Macfayden) having disastrous results. Youre not asked to sympathize with Jane or even understand her - rather it just presents what went on in a matter of fact way. Jane wants to get ahead but knows theres a cost, with her in effect serving as his de facto pimp when his latest conquest, a young woman straight off the bus from Idaho, shows up for a new job at the office. Its a strong showcase for Julia Garner, whos made big waves in recent years thanks to her arcs on “The Americans” and “Ozark”. Shes meant to play the film in a cold, aloof way as she cant act out emotionally lest she show her bosses what she thinks of them. She maintains our sympathy as shes personable, even if despite her conscience shes just another enabler. This ambiguity is going to make THE ASSISTANT a tough sit for many, as its not a clear-cut narrative at all. In eighty-seven minutes, we follow Jane on a relatively mundane day, with us getting the sense that its no better or worse than a usual Monday and that the next day shell be asked to do things that are just as bad. Is she responsible? Id wager shes not, as the movie shows shes merely a cog in a much larger machine, with Macfayden even telling her at one point that hes got a stack of four hundred CVs all eager to take the entry-level job she has. If she doesnt do it, someone else will. Shes still an enabler, but the film doesnt ask you to condemn her for that. This ambiguity will likely keep THE ASSISTANT from crossing over in a major way, although its certainly a fascinating companion piece to the trial thats happening now and an important time capsule in some ways.

Finally, someone pointed out that many people use the whole they're nice saying, to give them the right to take what they deserve; As if the woman is some sort of dessert or prize for being a stand-up human being. Early in the morning, a car arrives at her apartment in Astoria, Queens, and delivers her to her bosss office in Manhattan. She attends to the menial tasks first: emptying the garbage, making coffee, printing and collating scripts, finishing the arrangements for her bosss upcoming L. A. trip. There are two other junior assistants in the office—both of them guys whove been on the job a little longer and, so far as we can tell, smart college graduates who want to become movie producers someday. The morning starts quietly. But then come the other duties. Kitty Green s small, eerily effective The Assistant —and Julia Garner s wonderfully tense, terse performance—also shows the broken bracelets and earrings Jane finds on the floor near her bosss couch, and files away until their owners come back for them. It shows the stains on said couch, which she cleans with robotic familiarity—she knows to do this without being told. She also knows, almost as soon as she hangs up the phone, that shell have to write a formal apology email after her boss chews her out over mistakes shes made—mistakes that hardly amount to mistakes, more misunderstandings over how to handle your bosss screaming wife when she calls asking where he is. And where is he? Its probably obvious by now who this movie is about —who “the boss” is. But over the course of the single work day that The Assistant depicts, the film never gives him a name. Its Harvey Weinstein stand-in is a shadow, a suited torso walking in and out of meetings, a voice heard through a closed door charming a prospective client. His office is an empty chair. The power of Greens film can be summed up in the fact that this chair is almost all you need—the ways it holds the centers and edges and backgrounds of her frames, the way you can feel its power without even looking at it directly. (Weinstein, who has been accused of sexual misconduct by more than 80 women and is facing seven sex-crime charges in a trial that will begin in January, has denied all allegations of nonconsensual acts. Green doesnt have firsthand experience working for Weinstein herself; as she said in a recent interview with Deadline, The Assistant sprang out of a nonfiction project she was working on when the first Weinstein allegations broke. But shes made a powerful movie about the ways power enforces silence, even between assistants and other underlings—people convinced they have everything to lose. Its a movie about the tragedy of being brought into the fold and conditioned into that silence. And its a movie about how a person feels when they believe they have nowhere to go. Which is why some of Greens most powerful scenes arent even about the boss in a direct sense. Theyre about everyone else: the looks exchanged when the wife calls and the problem is pushed into Janes lap; the tasks that the men in the room take for granted as being her job, not theirs. Greens shooting style is crisp and precise, with static shots arranged to make us focus on the ways power flows between people who dont yet have it. All of this—every moment in the movie—rides on Garners shoulders, and she delivers something more complex than any words you might use to describe it. Green gives us close-ups of Garners face that ground us in her mind, in her reactions. What is she thinking? And when, amid everything that happens—between onboarding an inexperienced new assistant who seems too young for the job, to covering for her boss when hes at a hotel with said assistant, to the demoralizing experience of reporting this all to HR—will she cry? You can tell that Green has thought carefully about the best way to represent all of this. The stories that rocked Hollywood at the height of #MeToo were often stranger than fiction, which poses a problem for fiction. Something about the way movies work, about the ways the more outlandishly terrible stories can play onscreen, makes it hard to find the right tone, to maintain the proper distance and clarity—to differentiate between real-life tragedy and melodrama. But the tone of The Assistant subverts sensationalism—even in that meeting with HR, which almost runs the risk of giving us a too-cartoonish villain. Its a great credit to Matthew Macfadyen s HR executive—by turns loud, aggressive, perplexingly obtuse, and devastatingly straightforward—and the powder keg you feel building behind Garners eyes. The moment seals the movies impact; watching it, I wanted to leap out of my seat. The Assistant is just over 80 minutes long. Its as tense and tight as a thriller, but with none of the satisfaction. I was almost undecided about the effect of that tightness, and the ways in which Jane seemed to be realizing an awful lot in the span of just one especially trying work day, merely five weeks into the job. I wondered what Jane knew before this day and what she didnt, what shed noticed all along versus what struck her anew. But then I realized that The Assistant had supplied me with the answers: in the resigned, even wry silence of the bosss other employees, including the women. And by the end of the film, its all there in Janes face.
